Kenya Police Disable Radios in Protest over Pay

Kenya police officers on Monday jammed their communication system in protest over claims that their salary will not be reviewed because they are considered the most corrupt civil servants in the country.

The officers blocked the radios each time a senior officer tried to communicate an order or instructions to them and demanded their salary increment. "Wooi, wooi tunataka pesa yetu (Wooi, wooi, we want our money)," they said.

They said senior police officers are only interested in the wrangles with the commission but do not care about the juniors' welfare. The officers said they are disappointed that the July payroll has been finalised but the expected salary increment is not included.

Police have been waiting for the second and third batches of their salary increment since last year after only 26 per cent of the amount was effected following an agreement signed by former Commissioner of Police Major General (Rtd) Mohammed Hussein Ali.

The increment was supposed to reflect on their July payslips. Inspector General David Kimaiyo last week said police salaries will not be reviewed because they are the most corrupt civil servants.

Meanwhile, man suspected to have attacked and killed an administration police officer was shot dead by detectives yesterday. The suspect was killed a few minutes after committing a robbery on Dubois Road, Nairobi.
